Every night, I ask myself, “how did today go?” and “how can I be better tomorrow?”.

Sometimes I journal and other times I talk through my day within my own mind, asking myself what interactions made me feel good, which made me feel badly and where I would want to improve.

When I first realized there were people in the world who were 100% content with their lives, I was fascinated by the idea.

You can love your job?

You can love your lifestyle?

You can love yourself?

I bought book after book on the subject. I still have a bookcase with two shelves lined with Amazon’s recommendations for any users who purchased The Power of Now. Three years and twenty plus books later and I’m having an alchemist moment.

Everything I wanted, was right there, the entire time.

I didn’t like my job but the ability to change that was in the laptop next to me.

I didn’t love my lifestyle but I could sell everything I owned at any minute, I wasn’t obligated to any of my belongings.

I didn’t love myself but I could change that.

Just by asking myself two questions.

  1. How was today?
  2. How can I make tomorrow better?

By asking myself these questions, I would have started to shift my life in the direction I desired. Instead, I focused more on partying or Netflix shows.

Understanding the power of self reflection, I now end my days with these two questions to ensure that I’m not drowning out my problems with social events and movies. Instead, I’m changing anything that makes me unhappy so that my life is compiled with as much happiness as possible.

If I have an off day, I ask myself, what interaction started that? Then I ask myself, how can I react differently to make it so that type of interaction can bother me for less time?

If I’m having a great day, I ask myself, what made this day so great? Then I ask, how can I make tomorrow great based off of what I did today that made me feel so good?

Eighteen months of this routine has led me to one of my favorite moments of my life.

  1. I spent the last year and a half backpacking the world.

2. I built a freelance writing business while doing so, working with multimillion dollar companies and entrepreneurs to create content for their company blogs.

Most importantly, I have never been happier.

My life isn’t perfect, but what I’ve created is a mindset that allows me to pivot where I’m not happy and to dive deeper when I am.

For example, I lived in San Francisco for a month and found that as much as I loved it, I still wasn’t totally satisfied. So, I moved to Los Angeles where I currently feel like I’m in the exact right place that I need to be.

Another example, I have never felt more passionate about the type of writing I am creating for my clients. I have moved from short blogs (800 words) to long form content (1,500+) and have found so much satisfaction in creating a deeply valuable and well researched article. So, I’m shifting my writing focus to bring on more clients interested in long form content.

The people who commit themselves to self reflection followed by action will find happiness, fulfillment and the utmost sense of wellbeing.
